It’s Ceol and Fun on St. Patrick’s Weekend for Kilkenny Tradfest

Kilkenny Tradfest has been going from strength to strength over the last 8 years and 2020’s festival promises to be an exciting and innovative festival, full to the brim with concerts, céilís, sessions, Irish dance, pub gigs and much more!

Kilkenny comes alive with traditional music from  12th – 17th March, featuring some of the country’s top traditional music performers and offering concert goers unique opportunities to experience live music in some of Kilkenny’s most historic places. This year, the founding fathers of Celtic rock, Horslips will be playing for the first time ever in Kilkenny. This legendary band will rock Langton’s Kilkenny on the 16th March with their fusion of traditional Irish music and rock!

The festival has grown to include six full days of concerts, gigs, and sessions – and the mighty lineup this year includes; Christy Moore, the anniversary tour of Andy Irvine and Paul Brady’s seminal album from the same era, the almost annual return of Donal Lunny as part of ‘ZoDoMo’ and the wrap-up gig in The Set Theatre of multi-award winning singer, Iarla Ó Lionáird and his friend Steve Cooney. Kilfenora Ceili Band will also return to Kilkenny Tradfest for an uplifting performance in the Watergate Theatre on the 14th March, while for the first time ever, Irish multi-instrumentalist and singer Steph Geremia Trio will perform in Cleere’s.

During the weekend some of Ireland’s best musicians will also give masterclasses and workshops at the best city’s historical locations such as Kilkenny Castle Tower and Rothe House.  On Saturday 14th March, masterclasses includes; Máirtín O’ Connor on accordion, Dónal Lunny on bouzouki, Zoe Conway on fiddle. While historic Rothe House will echo to the sounds of local hero Tommy Lanigan on bodhrán, Declan Folan on fiddle and Michael McCague on guitar. Tickets for masterclasses and workshops are very reasonably priced and can be booked now at kilkennytradfest.com. Also, Mayo’s finest Tommy Stenson, a rising star of sean-nós dancing and English woman Alice Jones on Appalachian folk dancing will get the dancer’s feet tapping on the flag-stone floors of the 16thcentury merchant’s house.
