Taxsaver Explained for You…

How do Taxsaver Tickets Work?

Taxsaver is a discounted commuter ticket scheme introduced by the Government back in 1999. The scheme incentivises people to use public transport to and from work in the form of money savings.

Employers need to simply register their company online for the Taxsaver scheme. Once registered and login details received, start purchasing monthly, quarterly or annual tickets for your employees.

The cost is deducted directly from the employees’ gross salary, and massive savings between 29% and 52% can be made off the regular price, depending on the ticket type and your tax band. You will be surprised to know how much you can actually save.

Tax Saver Benefits for Employees

There are many other benefits for employees apart from massive monthly cash savings.

  • Employees can make significant tax and PRSI savings when they receive their annual, quarterly or monthly Taxsaver ticket as part of their remuneration package.
  • Savings of up to 40% tax, 8% USC and 4% PRSI can be made on the cost of the ticket. Individual savings vary depending on a person’s PAYE, PRSI and USC bands.
  • No need to stand in a long queue for bus or rail tickets.
  • No more car parking problems.
  • No need to stand in a long queue for bus or rail tickets.
  • Prepaid Taxsaver tickets are cheaper than paying cash as the cash value of annual bus ticket runs out in eight months which means you are traveling free for last four months.

Employer Benefits from TaxSaver Tickets

Employers can also benefit from Tax Saver scheme in multiple ways.

  • Salary Sacrifice – Your company will make Employer PRSI savings up to 10.75%, as you will have reduced the gross income of each employee receiving a Taxsaver commuter ticket. That’s a saving of over €1,000 to the company on a €11,000 order.
  • Cash Bonus – An employer can also offer employees TaxSaver commuter tickets instead of annual cash bonus. This option provides a better value to employees as well as employer as cash bonuses are taxed but Tax saver commuter tickets are not.
  • Benefits-in-kind – A third option to benefit from the scheme is for employers to offer employees Tax Saver commuter tickets as a benefit-in-kind.
